Daniel Riegler (Austria - exploring USA)
Born in 1977, Graz, Austria. Currently living and working in Vienna. Studied classical and jazz
trombone with Rudi Josel and Ed Neumeister.
He works as a freelancer for various orchestras, ensembles and interpreter of twentieth century music
as well as composer. His main field of interest as composer is the search for working concepts
between improvisation and compostion in jazz and contemporary music.
He is a founding member of the „JazzWerkstatt Wien“ an artists initiative creating a working and
performance platform for cutting-edge music. Furthermore Daniel is a bandleader of his 19-piece band
„Studio Dan“ and member of the quartet „BINTOBONE“. For the Jazzfestival Saalfelden 2007 he
developed „The Ten Thousand Things“, a composition based on a computergame, and the duo
compositions for the project „T.B.N.- two bones notated“.
2005 he performed as a soloist at the premiere of Gideon Nxumalo´s "Jazzfantasia" with the MIAGI-
Festival Orchestra Johannesburg, South Africa.
2006 Appearances at the Inntöne-, Moers- and Wiesen-Jazz-Festivals and with the Klangforum Wien
at the Salzburger Festspiele and the Biennale Venice. Premiere of his "Virtual Conductor II" at the
Kulturzentrum bei den Minoriten, Graz
2007 "Featured Artist" at the Jazzfestival Saalfelden and guestmusician of the Klangforum Wien.
Appearances at the Opéra National de Paris, the Warsaw Autumn Festival, the Biennale Venice and
Wien Modern as well as at the Frischzelle Festival Cologne and the Bibliothèque nationale de France
in Paris.
2008 Leader of the „Porgy & Bess“ stageband „Studio Dan“. Winner of the „Harry-Pepl-Prize-2008“
2009 Nomination for „The New Austrian Sound of Music“
2010 Winner of the „Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik“ for the debut-release „Creatures & other
stuff“
